The land has been occupied by Native Americans for thousands of years, as many would expect due to Native American tribes occupying most of the Americas at the time. The Payaya Indians were the most successful people to inhabit the land, overall.  They lived by what is now called The San Antonio River Valley, and deeply cherished the refreshing water and what was their lifeblood. They lived undisturbed for many thousand of years until a shipwrecked Spanish Explorer arrived in 1536, His name was Alvar De Vaca. His run in with the Indians was not very good for him. He was enslaved for a period of time and released to his peers in Mexico City. He was lucky to escape with his life, after all, he was very alien to them.

The San Antonio river was named by the Spaniards after Saint Anthony of Padua, whose holiday they were celebrating. Eventually, this would lead to the name of the city of San Antonio. 

In 1709 the Spanish explored and settled what is now Downtown San Antonio. They first built small villages and missions along the river. This was the framework of what is now San Antonio. The Native American did not fare too well after the Spaniards came. It is fair to say that the Spaniards completely ended life for the Native Americans, their way of life and much of their traditions and history. The Spanish only viewed them as slave labor and never cared to see them through the invasion and help continue their way of life. The diseases brought by the Spanish along with the battles and slavery all but decimated the local Indian populations. Much like the story on much of the settlement of the U.S. 

After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, many Anglo settlers came to the area, invited by the Mexican government. The Mexican government then changed power seat and rescinded the original constitution. This sparked an outrage and it was now Texian and Tejano men versus Mexico. Santa Anna did well at calming the situation but when the attacked the Alamo, everything changed. The Texan army smashed the Mexican army and became the Republic of Texas with San Antonio being the center stage.  

 Texas became an official state in 1845, after the war with Mexico. This result of the war meant that Texas was now part of the United States, and not Mexico anymore.  At the start of the Civil War the population had grew to about 15,000 people.  By 1900, San Antonio had become the largest city in Texas.  

Around this time, the city streets were widened to accommodate more traffic. By now you started seeing some motor cars on the road.
